DANDYISM & DEUS EX MACHINA
DANDYISM & DEUS EX MACHINA
DANDYISM
Dandyism is defined as " a literary and artistic style of the latter part of the nineteenth century marked by artificiality and excessive refinement."
A Dandy is defined as" a man who is overly attentive to his clothes and appearance."
Dandyism become popular in the late eighteenth century in Britian and it lasted into the nineteenth century. The dandies were described as being tall and slender and they had a very witty attitude. They emulated aristocratic style, but they themselves were born from middle class families. Baudelaire was quoted as saying,"no othewr status but that of cultivating the idea of beauty in their own persons... The dandy must aspire to be sublime without interuption; he must live and sleep before a mirror."
Famous dandies were Baudelaire, Poe, and Oscar Wilde.
DEUS EX MACHINA
This is Latin which means "god from the machine" or "god out of the machine."
The Greeks and Romans used this device in the plays they performed. If the plot had a sticky situation that needed to be resolved, the writer of the play would have god come down onto the stage using a mechanical device. Modern use of Deus ex machina isn't as literal as God coming down from a machine. Today movies, TV shows, and plays use this device through an unexpectedthing or person introduced into the plot to resolve a conflit. Deus ex machina is the "easy" way out if writers need to end their plot quick or save their main character. It comes off as being very anti-climatic.
Examples of the uses of Deus ex machina are plays by Euripides, James Bond, and the National Treasure movies.
